Some moments stay with us long after the last stitch is tied off.

At the 2026 Missouri State Fair Military Appreciation Day, the President and Operations Manager of Countryside Quilts® had the pleasure and honor of witnessing the presentation of four Quilts of Valor to service members. It was a meaningful reminder of the power of handmade gifts: and of the gratitude carried in every carefully chosen fabric, every seam, and every quilted line.

For Countryside Quilts®, the presentation reinforced our ongoing commitment to the Quilts of Valor Foundation and our sponsorship of this important mission. We are grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside the service members, veterans, quilters, volunteers, and organizers who help make these ceremonies possible.

A Meaningful Tribute at the Missouri State Fair

The Missouri State Fair’s Military Appreciation Day provides an opportunity for fairgoers and the broader community to recognize the men and women who have served our country.

Amid the activity of the fair, a Quilts of Valor presentation offers a quieter and deeply personal moment. Four service members were honored with quilts made to express appreciation, comfort, and respect. While each quilt is unique, the message behind every presentation is clear: their service and sacrifice are remembered, valued, and honored.

The President and Operations Manager of Countryside Quilts® were honored to witness this presentation firsthand. No ceremony like this happens through the work of one person alone. It reflects the dedication of quilters who give their time and talent, volunteers who help coordinate the effort, organizers who create space for recognition, and communities that continue to show up with gratitude.

What a Quilt of Valor Represents

According to the Quilts of Valor Foundation, a Quilt of Valor is a handmade quilt awarded to a service member or veteran who has been touched by war. The quilt is more than a beautiful object. It is a tangible expression of appreciation for service and sacrifice.

That meaning is part of what makes quilting so special. A quilt can provide warmth, but it can also carry a message. It can say, “We remember.” It can say, “Thank you.” It can connect one person’s skills and time with another person’s story.

For service members receiving a Quilt of Valor, the presentation can become a lasting memory. For the quilters and supporters involved, it is an opportunity to transform creative work into an act of care.

Patriotic quilting details like red, white, and blue thread often help makers express appreciation through their work. This image is illustrative and is not one of the quilts presented at the fair.

Countryside Quilts’ Commitment to Quilts of Valor

Countryside Quilts® is proud to support the Quilts of Valor mission through sponsorship and community involvement. Witnessing four quilts presented at the Missouri State Fair made that commitment feel especially personal.

Our shop has always been about more than fabric, patterns, tools, and notions. Countryside Quilts® is a creative home for makers, doers, and creators who use their hands to bring meaningful ideas to life. Some projects brighten a home. Some celebrate a family milestone. Others preserve memories or honor people whose service has shaped our communities.

Quilts of Valor belong among those deeply meaningful projects.

The craftsmanship involved in a service quilt requires patience, care, and purpose. Quilters consider color, layout, texture, quilting design, and finishing details: not simply to create something attractive, but to make something worthy of the person receiving it. That combination of skill and heart reflects the very best of the quilting community.

Honoring the People Behind the Presentation

It is important to recognize everyone who contributes to a Quilts of Valor presentation.

First are the service members and veterans who have given of themselves in service to our nation. Their dedication deserves our respect: not only during a special event, but throughout the year.

Then there are the quilters. They often work quietly, block by block, preparing a quilt that may eventually be wrapped around the shoulders of someone they have never met. Their work demonstrates how a familiar craft can become a deeply personal gesture of gratitude.

Volunteers and organizers also play an essential role. They help coordinate quilts, presentations, gatherings, and opportunities for communities to participate. Their efforts create the setting where recognition can happen with the dignity and care it deserves.

At the Missouri State Fair, these contributions came together in a moment centered on four service members. Countryside Quilts® is thankful to have witnessed it.

When Quilting Tells a Story

Quilters understand that fabric can tell a story.

A patriotic print may bring to mind a flag, a hometown, or a family member who served. A carefully pieced block may represent time spent learning from a grandparent. A finished quilt may become part of a ceremony, a keepsake, or a family tradition.

That storytelling quality is why quilts have such a powerful place in community life. They are practical, personal, and permanent. They can be held, displayed, passed down, and remembered.

At Countryside Quilts®, we see that spirit in the makers who visit our store, attend classes, seek advice, and bring projects to our team. We also see it in the community connections made through meaningful efforts like Quilts of Valor.

Every quilt carries the care of the person who made it. Quilts created for service members carry an especially powerful message of gratitude.

A Stitch of Gratitude

The presentation of four Quilts of Valor at the 2026 Missouri State Fair was a special reminder that gratitude can take many forms. Sometimes it is spoken from a stage. Sometimes it is shared in a handshake. And sometimes, it is stitched into a quilt and placed gently around the shoulders of someone who has served.

Countryside Quilts® is honored to support Quilts of Valor and grateful to everyone who continues this work. To the service members honored, thank you. To the quilters, volunteers, organizers, and supporters who make these moments possible, thank you as well.

May the warmth of these quilts: and the gratitude behind them: continue to reach the people they were made to honor.

Let’s keep stitching greatness.
