New Mexico Land Of Enchantment Block 17 - The “Land of Enchantment” describes New Mexico’s scenic beauty and rich history. The nickname became the official State Nickname of New Mexico on April 8, 1999. The simple and meaningful design of the state flag features an interpretation of an ancient symbol of the sun as found on a late 19th century water jar from Zia Pueblo. The Tulip Tree with its long-stemmed bright green leaves and yellowish-green tulip like flowers has been Indians official state tree since 1931. During the American Revolution, Vermont declared independence separately from the original 13 colonies. The Continental Congress refused to recognize it. Vermont was admitted to the union as the 14th state in 1790, after 14 years as an independent republic. Vermont is the country’s leading producer of maple syrup. Utah Beehive State Block 12 - May 10, 1869, two steam locomotives met at Promontory, Utah, for the “Joining of the Rails Ceremony,” where the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads completed the transcontinental route. Oregon Beaver State Block 11 - The origin of the name Oregon is not certain one theory is the name comes from the French Canadian word “ouragan” meaning “storm” or “hurricane, or from the Spanish word “orejon” meaning “big-ear” a term that was used by many Indian tribes in the area, or from the Spanish word “orégano” for the wild sage which grows so vigorously in eastern Oregon. The Beaver State is the official state nickname. I started out designing a traditional Baltimore style quilt, and then things got a little spooky, as ghost, owls, bats, pumpkins, candy and witches filled my drawing board. The 20in x 20in center medallion block is surrounded by twelve 10in x 10in blocks and finished with a scalloped bat border just for fun. Full pattern set includes 13 individual pattern leaflets and full-size 20in x 20in pattern for the center medallion block. Finished size 58in x 58in.

Ohio The Buckeye State Block 14 - It’s thought that the first use of “Buckeye” to refer to an Ohioan was back in 1788. Campus Martius was a fort that served as home for early settlers. The story goes, that on September 2, 1788, a certain Colonel Sproat lead a procession of judges to the court. His posture was erect and he stood six feet, four inches tall. As he lead the procession, glittering sword in hand, onlooking Indians shouted out “Hetuck, hetuck, hetuck” meaning “Big Buckeye. The state of Ohio is named after the Ohio River. Ohio is the name that the Iroquois Indians used when referring to the river and means “large” or “beautiful river. Ohio is the birthplace of seven U.S. presidents, the first professional baseball team, and the all-American favorite, the hot dog! Georgia has several nicknames but one seem to stand above the rest “The Peach State” for the importance of peaches in the Georgia agricultural economy.
