We all have them: that drawer full of "un-wearables." You know the one. It’s packed with high school sports jerseys, concert tees from that legendary 1998 tour, and those oversized souvenir shirts from family vacations that you just can’t bring yourself to throw away. They are more than just cotton and ink; they are memories you can touch.
At Countryside Quilts®, owned and operated by Countryside General Stores LLC, we believe that your most precious stories shouldn't be tucked away in a dark drawer. They deserve to be front and center, keeping you warm and reminding you of the good times. That is where the magic of memory quilts and T-shirt quilts comes in.
Whether you are a seasoned quilter or a "maker-in-training," creating a memory quilt is one of the most rewarding projects you will ever undertake. In this guide, we’re going to walk you through the basics of turning those keepsakes into a high-quality heirloom.
The first step is often the hardest: deciding which shirts make the cut. When you’re gathering materials for your memory quilt, don't feel like you have to stick strictly to T-shirts. You can include sweatshirts, jerseys, and even cotton button-downs.

Pro Tip: Look for common themes. Is this a graduation quilt? A marathon-runner’s victory lap? A tribute to a loved one? Grouping your items by color or theme helps the final design feel intentional rather than cluttered. While you're at it, check for holes or heavy stains. While a little "distressed" look adds character, you want the fabric to be sturdy enough to survive the sewing machine.
Many people think a T-shirt quilt has to be a simple, boring grid of squares. While there’s nothing wrong with a classic layout, we love to see our customers push the creative envelope.
If you’re looking for inspiration, we highly recommend checking out the book Beyond the Tee: Innovative T-Shirt Quilts. This resource is a game-changer for anyone who wants to move past "standard" layouts. It teaches you how to incorporate different garment types and motifs into a cohesive, artistic design.
For those who want a bit more "pop," the T-Shirt Pop-Ups pattern is another fantastic resource. It offers several different layout options that help your favorite logos literally stand out on the quilt face. By mixing in some coordinating cotton prints or solids, you can turn a collection of random shirts into a sophisticated piece of home decor. Using the Innovative T-Shirt Quilt book as a guide can also help you solve common layout puzzles, like what to do when you have one massive logo and five tiny ones.
If there is one thing you take away from this "101" guide, let it be this: You must stabilize your T-shirts.
Standard quilting cotton is stable: it doesn't stretch. T-shirts, on the other hand, are knits designed to move with your body. If you try to sew a stretchy T-shirt directly to a non-stretchy piece of cotton, you are going to end up with puckers, waves, and a whole lot of frustration.

Before you cut your final squares, apply a lightweight, iron-on fusible stabilizer to the back of the T-shirt. This "locks" the knit in place, making it behave just like regular quilting fabric.
Once your blocks are stabilized and trimmed, it’s time to start sewing! Because T-shirt fabric is thicker than standard quilting cotton, we recommend using a slightly larger needle (like a 90/14) and a high-quality thread.
At Countryside Quilts®, we are big fans of using high-quality polyester or cotton threads that can handle the extra bulk of the seams. As you piece your rows together, take your time. Press your seams open to help reduce the "bump" where multiple T-shirt layers meet.
If you find that your machine is struggling with the thickness, try using a walking foot. It helps pull the top and bottom layers through the machine at the same rate, preventing those annoying shifts in the fabric.
You’ve put in the hours, the sentiment, and the hard work. Now comes the part that often intimidates makers the most: the actual quilting.
T-shirt quilts are notoriously heavy and bulky. Trying to wrestle a twin or queen-sized memory quilt through a standard domestic sewing machine can be a workout you didn't sign up for! This is where our longarm quilting service becomes your best friend.

Sending your project to a professional longarmer ensures that the layers stay perfectly flat and the stitching is consistent throughout. Plus, you can choose a quilting pattern that complements the theme of your quilt: maybe some "meandering" for a soft look, or "sharp geometric lines" for a sports-themed quilt.
Not sure what it will cost? We’ve made it easy! You can use our Longarm & Finishing Estimator to get a price quote right from your couch. Just plug in your dimensions and preferences, and you'll see how affordable it is to get that professional, heirloom-quality finish.
There is a special kind of joy in seeing a finished memory quilt for the first time. It’s not just a blanket; it’s a timeline of a life well-lived. Whether it's a gift for a graduate or a way to keep a loved one close, these quilts are the ultimate "maker" project.

If you’re ready to start your own memory quilt journey, stop by Countryside Quilts® or browse our online shop. From the Beyond the Tee book to the perfect stabilizers and threads, we have everything you need to get the job done. And when that top is finished, remember: we’re here to help you cross the finish line with our expert longarm services.
Happy quilting, makers! Let's get those memories out of the drawer and onto the bed where they belong.
