You did it! That quilt top you've been piecing together for weeks (or let's be honest, months) is finally done. The blocks are sewn, the borders are attached, and you're ready to cross the finish line. But here's the thing, your quilt isn't truly finished until it's quilted. That's where the magic happens, and that's where we come in.
At Countryside Quilts™, we're all about helping Jefferson City quilters like you turn those beautiful tops into heirloom-quality finished quilts. Whether this is your first time sending a quilt out for longarm quilting or you're a seasoned pro, there are a few things you should know before you drop off your project. Let's walk through it together.
If you've never seen a longarm quilting machine in action, it's pretty impressive. These specialized machines allow us to stitch intricate designs across your entire quilt, from edge to edge or with custom free-motion work, creating that gorgeous texture and dimension that hand quilting or even a domestic machine just can't replicate at scale.
But beyond the aesthetics, longarm quilting serves a crucial structural purpose. It holds your three layers (top, batting, and backing) together, ensuring your quilt will last for generations. At Countryside Quilts™, part of the Countryside General Stores LLC family alongside the Countryside Experience Podcast, we treat every quilt that comes through our doors like it's destined to become a family treasure.

Before you bring your quilt to us, there are a few preparation steps that'll make the quilting process smoother and give you the best possible finish.
Take the time to square up your quilt top. This means making sure all four corners are true 90-degree angles and your edges are straight. Even if your piecing was perfect, quilt tops can sometimes stretch or shift during construction. Use a large square ruler and rotary cutter to trim and straighten those edges. Trust me, this step prevents wavy borders and puckering later.
Go back over your quilt top with an iron and make sure all your seams are pressed flat and crisp. Any little bumps or folds can create issues during the quilting process, especially when we're running edge-to-edge patterns. Flat seams = smooth quilting.
Give your quilt top a once-over and trim any loose threads or thread tails. Those little guys can sometimes get caught in the longarm machine or show through lighter fabrics. A quick snip now saves headaches later.
Here's one of the most common questions we get from first-time longarm customers: "How big does my backing need to be?"
The answer: bigger than your quilt top.
Your backing fabric (and batting, if you're providing your own) needs to be at least 4-8 inches larger than your quilt top on all sides. So if your quilt top is 60" x 72", your backing should be roughly 68-76" x 80-88" at minimum. This extra fabric isn't just a suggestion, it's essential.
Why? Because longarm machines need that extra fabric to grip and hold your quilt taut on the frame. Without it, we can't properly load your quilt, and you might end up with puckering or uneven tension. Give us that wiggle room, and we'll give you a beautifully quilted finish.

Let's talk about minky. If you've never worked with it, minky is that ultra-soft, plush fabric with a fluffy pile that feels like a cloud. It's wildly popular for quilt backings, especially for baby quilts and cozy lap quilts, because who doesn't want to snuggle up in something that soft?
But here's the pro tip that'll save you some heartache: Minky backings can be tricky during longarm quilting.
Because of that fluffy, loose pile structure, minky fibers have a tendency to pull through to the front of your quilt during the stitching process. It's not a flaw in the quilting, it's just the nature of the fabric. Those soft fibers can migrate through the layers and show up on your quilt top, especially in areas with dense quilting or when using certain thread types.
Does this mean you can't use minky? Not at all! Plenty of quilters love it and are willing to accept that trade-off for the extra softness. Just go in with your eyes open. If you want a absolutely pristine quilt top with zero chance of fiber migration, you might want to consider a high-quality cotton or flannel backing instead. But if you're making a snuggly quilt where ultimate softness is the priority, minky might still be your best friend, just know what to expect.
Once your quilt is prepped and ready, it's time to talk about the fun stuff: quilting designs and thread colors.
Edge-to-edge (E2E) quilting is the most popular and cost-effective option. We select a continuous pattern, think swirls, paisleys, feathers, or geometric designs, and stitch it across your entire quilt from edge to edge. It's perfect for busy prints or scrap quilts where you want texture without competing with the piecing.
We have a huge library of E2E patterns at Countryside Quilts™, so whether you want something modern and minimal or classic and traditional, we've got you covered.
Want something more personalized? Custom free-motion work allows us to highlight specific areas of your quilt with different designs. We can quilt in the ditch around blocks, add custom motifs in open spaces, or create stunning feathered borders. It's more time-intensive (and typically costs more), but the results are absolutely stunning for special quilts.

Thread color can dramatically change the look of your finished quilt. A matching or neutral thread color (like cream or light gray) blends into the background and lets your fabric choices shine. A contrasting thread color makes the quilting design a focal point. Not sure what to choose? We're happy to help you think it through when you drop off your quilt.
Look, we know you have options. Jefferson City and the surrounding Missouri areas have some talented longarm quilters. So why bring your quilt to us?
We're family-owned and Missouri proud. Countryside General Stores LLC operates both Countryside Quilts™ and the Countryside Experience Podcast, and we're passionate about serving quilters throughout Missouri, from Jefferson City to Marshfield and everywhere in between.
We treat your quilt like it's our own. Whether you've been piecing for decades or this is your very first quilt, we understand the time, love, and creativity you've poured into your project. We handle every quilt with care and attention to detail because we know it matters.
We're quilters too. We're not just a service, we're part of your quilting community. We get the excitement of finishing a project, the frustration when seams don't line up perfectly, and the joy of wrapping yourself in something you made with your own hands.
If you've got a quilt top that's ready for its final transformation, we'd love to help you bring it across the finish line. Here's what to do next:
Drop by the shop. Bring your quilt top (and backing/batting if you're providing them) to Countryside Quilts™. We'll chat about design options, timelines, and pricing. No appointment needed, just stop in during business hours.
Contact us first if you have questions. If you're not sure whether your quilt is ready or you want to discuss options before you make the trip, give us a call or send us a message. We're happy to walk you through the process.
Plan ahead for busy seasons. Like most longarm quilters, we get busier during certain times of the year (hello, holiday quilts!). If you're working on a deadline, reach out early so we can accommodate your timeline.
Crossing the finish line on a quilt is one of the best feelings in quilting. All that planning, cutting, piecing, and pressing comes together into something functional and beautiful: something that'll keep someone warm, comfort a loved one, or become a cherished family heirloom.
At Countryside Quilts™, we're honored to be part of that journey with you. Whether you're a Jefferson City local or you're driving in from a nearby Missouri town, we're here to help you create something special.
So grab that finished quilt top, make sure your backing is sized up properly, and come see us. We can't wait to see what you've been working on: and we can't wait to add that finishing touch that makes it truly complete.
Happy quilting, friends. We'll see you soon!
