Now comes the part that can feel a little bit intimidating: handing your "baby" over to a professional for longarm quilting. When a quilt is loaded onto a longarm frame, it is under a specific amount of tension. If your seams are bulky or your fabric is wrinkled, that tension can actually emphasize those "problem areas" rather than hiding them. Trimming the "Whiskers" Start by flipping your quilt over to the back. Look for any loose threads, we call these "whiskers." If you have a light-colored background and dark thread tails underneath, those dark threads can "ghost" through the fabric once the quilt is quilted. Using a pair of Perfect Scissors Blue 6in or the Perfect Scissors Green 4-3/16in, snip those loose ends close to the seam. Pressing for Success When you head to the ironing board, try to avoid using a lot of steam. While steam feels like it helps get those stubborn wrinkles out, it can actually stretch your fabric out of shape. Use a dry iron and press your seams flat. Most longarmers prefer seams pressed to one side, but if you’ve pressed yours open, that’s okay too, just make sure they are consistent. Finally, use a lint roller on the front and back. If you have a furry "sewing assistant" at home (we love our Missouri farm dogs and cats!), a quick roll ensures no pet hair gets permanently quilted into your heirloom. 2. Stay Stitching: The Secret Safety Net If your quilt top has pieced borders or a lot of seams that end right at the edge of the quilt, stay stitching is your best friend. Stay stitching is simply a straight line of stitching around the entire perimeter of your quilt top, about ⅛" away from the edge. Why do we do this? Prevents Popping: When the quilt is stretched on the longarm rollers, those edge seams are under pressure. Stay stitching keeps them from popping open. Stability: It keeps the outer edge from stretching or distorting while we work. Since your binding will eventually cover the outer ¼" of the quilt, that ⅛" stay stitch will remain completely hidden. Squaring Up: Avoiding the "Wavy Border" Blues One of the most common challenges we face in a longarm quilting service is a quilt top that isn't square. If the borders are longer than the center of the quilt, you get "wavy borders." This can lead to pleats or puckers in the quilting because there is simply too much fabric for the space. How to Check Your Squareness: Measure the Center: Lay your quilt flat and measure through the center from top to bottom. Measure the Sides: Measure the left side and the right side. These three numbers should be the same (or within about a half-inch). The Grid Test: Use a large ruler or a floor grid to check that your corners are true 90-degree angles. If you find that your borders are significantly longer than the center, it might be worth taking them off and re-attaching them correctly (measuring the quilt center first, then cutting the border to that exact length). Marking the Top: Which Way is Up? This step is quick but vital. Some quilts have a very obvious "top" and "bottom," but many modern or geometric designs can be confusing once they are laid out horizontally on a longarm frame. If your quilt has a specific orientation, please mark the "TOP" edge. You can do this by pinning a small piece of paper with the word "TOP" written on it to the upper edge using Karen Kay Buckley Shorter Perfect Pins. Don't forget to do the same for your backing fabric if it’s directional! There’s nothing worse than a beautiful backing ending up upside down because of a simple misunderstanding. 5. Backing and Batting: Give Us Some "Wiggle Room" This is perhaps the most important technical requirement when you prep quilt top for longarm. On a longarm machine, the backing fabric is what is actually attached to the rollers. The quilt top then "floats" on top. Because of the way the clamps work, we need extra fabric on all sides. The Gold Standard: The 4-Inch Rule Your backing fabric (and your batting) should be at least 4 to 6 inches larger than your quilt top on ALL sides. If your quilt top is 60" x 80", your backing should be at least 68" x 88". This extra 8 inches total (4 on each side) gives us the room we need to attach the clamps and ensure the needle doesn't hit a roller or a clamp during the process. Backing Prep Tips: Remove Selvages: If you have to piece your backing, cut the selvages off the seam inside the backing. Selvages are woven tighter than the rest of the fabric and don't stretch at the same rate, which can cause a "pucker" along the seam line. Horizontal Seams: If possible, run your backing seams horizontally. This helps the fabric roll more evenly onto the longarm bars. When you slow stitch, there are no 1/4" seam allowances to worry about. There are no "quilt police" checking your points. There is just you, your needle, and the story you are telling with every simple, repetitive motion. What You’ll Need: A Foundation Fabric: A piece of plain cotton or muslin (about 5" x 7"). Fabric Scraps: Dig through your scrap bin! Look for different textures and colors.
