Handling your fabric correctly is the difference between a quilt that looks professional and lasts for generations, and one that... well, might have a few "unintended surprises" after its first trip through the laundry. So, grab a cup of coffee (keep it away from the white fabric!), and let’s dive into Fabric Care 101. To Wash or Not to Wash? (The Great Debate) If you ask ten quilters if they pre-wash their fabric, you’ll probably get twelve different answers. It’s the age-old debate in the quilting community. Here at Countryside Quilts®, we say it depends on your goal! Why You Might Want to Pre-Wash: Shrinkage Control: Most high-quality quilting cottons will shrink slightly (usually 3–5%). If you piece a quilt with unwashed fabric and then wash the finished quilt, you’ll get that classic "crinkly" heirloom look. If you want a perfectly flat, modern finish, pre-washing is your best friend. Color Bleeding: Reds, purples, and deep blues are notorious for "bleeding" onto their lighter neighbors. Pre-washing helps rinse out excess dye before it has a chance to ruin your hard work. Chemical Sensitivities: Fabrics come from the factory with "sizing": a chemical finish that gives the fabric body and helps it stay crisp on the bolt. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to wash this out before handling the fabric for hours. Why Some Quilters Skip It: Many quilters love the stiffness of the sizing because it makes the fabric easier to cut and piece accurately. Plus, skipping the pre-wash means you can start sewing right now. If you choose not to pre-wash, we highly recommend using a "Color Catcher" in the first wash of your finished quilt to soak up any loose dye. The "How-To" of Pre-Washing If you’ve decided to take the plunge and wash your yardage, don't just toss it in with your jeans! Your fabric deserves better. Sorting and Testing Always sort by color. Warning: Never put small pre-cuts like 5-inch squares or 2.5-inch strips directly into a washing machine. They will emerge as a tangled, frayed mess that will make you want to weep. If you absolutely feel the need to wash pre-cuts, place them in a mesh laundry bag and use a very delicate cycle, or simply hand-soak them in a basin. For most pre-cut projects, it’s best to skip the pre-wash and use high-quality notions and fabric care products like Best Press afterward to keep things crisp. Storage Solutions: Keeping Your Stash Happy Your fabric stash is an investment. Whether you have a modest shelf or a dedicated "fabric vault," how you store it matters. Now comes the part that can feel a little bit intimidating: handing your "baby" over to a professional for longarm quilting. When a quilt is loaded onto a longarm frame, it is under a specific amount of tension. Trimming the "Whiskers" Start by flipping your quilt over to the back. Look for any loose threads, we call these "whiskers." Stay Stitching: The Secret Safety Net If your quilt top has pieced borders or a lot of seams that end right at the edge of the quilt, stay stitching is your best friend. Stay stitching is simply a straight line of stitching around the entire perimeter of your quilt top, about ⅛" away from the edge. Why do we do this? Prevents Popping: When the quilt is stretched on the longarm rollers, those edge seams are under pressure. Stay stitching keeps them from popping open. Stability: It keeps the outer edge from stretching or distorting while we work. Since your binding will eventually cover the outer ¼" of the quilt, that ⅛" stay stitch will remain completely hidden. Squaring Up: Avoiding the "Wavy Border" Blues One of the most common challenges we face in a longarm quilting service is a quilt top that isn't square. Some quilts have a very obvious "top" and "bottom," but many modern or geometric designs can be confusing once they are laid out horizontally on a longarm frame. On a longarm machine, the backing fabric is what is actually attached to the rollers. The quilt top then "floats" on top. Because of the way the clamps work, we need extra fabric on all sides. The Gold Standard: The 4-Inch Rule Your backing fabric (and your batting) should be at least 4 to 6 inches larger than your quilt top on ALL sides. If your quilt top is 60" x 80", your backing should be at least 68" x 88". This extra 8 inches total (4 on each side) gives us the room we need to attach the clamps and ensure the needle doesn't hit a roller or a clamp during the process. Backing Prep Tips: Remove Selvages: If you have to piece your backing, cut the selvages off the seam inside the backing. Selvages are woven tighter than the rest of the fabric and don't stretch at the same rate, which can cause a "pucker" along the seam line. Horizontal Seams: If possible, run your backing seams horizontally. This helps the fabric roll more evenly onto the longarm bars.
