Quiltfolk Dogs is a Quiltfolk special edition that we published in partnership with author and quilter Teresa Duryea Wong. It is 96 pages, includes a foreword by Victoria Findlay Wolfe, and reads more like a quilt exhibition in print—meaning it contains fewer words and features MORE quilts than a traditional issue of Quiltfolk, giving readers the opportunity to view a collection of carefully curated quilts that are sure to excite dog lovers everywhere. For this special edition, we asked our readers to submit their favorite quilts featuring dogs as well as photos of dogs with quilts. And the response was amazing! We received 258 entries, and even though it was so fun to review all the submissions, it was really tough to narrow the final selections down to just 44. But we did, and we can’t wait to share this special edition with our readers!

Every quilt begins with a first stitch. For our nation, that beginning was Delaware, The First State. Delaware is a place where life feels closely knit, with only three counties— the fewest of any state. In New Castle County, the northernmost, you’ll find a lively mix of historic towns and modern energy: cobblestone streets where the past still speaks, balanced with a bustling city center in Wilmington. In Kent County, farmland stretches toward the horizon, and Dover stands as both the capital and a keeper of tradition. To the south, affectionately called The Slower Lower, Sussex County unfolds in wide open fields, quiet waterways, and coastal towns where the pace turns leisurely and community thrives. Together, these three counties form a state that may be small in size but is expansive in spirit. In Delaware, the past and present are carefully preserved. It’s a place that reminds us that small beginnings can carry enormous meaning, much like the smallest scrap of fabric can become the heart of a quilt. Writers: Rebecca Bratburd, Mel Burke, Meg Cox, Courtney Mabeus-Brown, Christopher Michel, Diane L. Murtha, Sharbreon Plummer, and Teresa Duryea Wong Photographer: Azuree Holloway Photo Stylist: Trevor Holloway

Washington, D.C. is a city of paradoxes—small in size but vast in influence. At just 68 square miles, it is smaller than Rhode Island, yet it holds more than 175 embassies, the nation’s most powerful institutions, and a daily population that swells far beyond its borders. Founded in 1790 from land carved out of Maryland and Virginia, the District of Columbia is younger than Georgetown and, in a legal quirk of history, hasn’t officially “existed” as a city since 1871. In 2026, as the United States marks its 250th anniversary, the nation’s capital feels especially resonant. Across the country, communities are reflecting on the people, movements, and stories that have shaped America over the last two and a half centuries. And what better place to consider that legacy than Washington, D.C.? Here, history is not confined to museums or memorials; it is woven into daily life, constantly evolving through the voices and hands of the people who call the District home. In D.C., all roads famously converge at the Capitol Building, the symbolic and literal center of its quadrants. Beneath the marble monuments and grand memorials, the city hums with everyday life—riding the nation’s second busiest Metro system, sharing more wine per capita than any state, and moving through spaces where history is never far from the surface. The Library of Congress stands as the largest in the world, while the Lincoln Memorial has witnessed both solemn reflection and transformative calls for justice. But D.C. is also a city of intricate layering, much like a quilt itself. Neighborhoods shift within just a few miles, each adding their own fabric to the whole: Georgetown’s cobblestones, Capitol Hill’s rowhouses, and creative spaces where makers gather to cut, piece, and stitch meaning into material. It is within this layered, storied landscape that Washington, D.C. quilters create. Their work reflects a city stitched together from history, migration, memory, and meaning—where every thread, like every road, leads somewhere significant. Writers: Rebecca Bratburd, Mel Burke, Meg Cox, Frances O’Roark Dowell, Courtney Mabeus-Brown, Christopher Michel, Diane L. Murtha, Sharbreon Plummer and Teresa Duryea Wong. Big as it is in spirit and scale, Texas simply can’t be contained in a single issue. With nearly 270,000 square miles to its name, it’s a place where a drive across the state can easily take a full day. From within that expanse, we turn our focus to the Greater Houston area—a region rich with layered histories, global influences, and deeply rooted creative communities. At the center is Houston, the largest city in Texas. Known as Space City for its enduring connection to NASA and space exploration, Houston is also one of the most diverse cities in the country, with more than 145 languages spoken across its neighborhoods. As a global energy hub, most people you meet will share some connection to one of the hundreds of oil and gas companies based here. Beneath the downtown Houston streets, an underground tunnel system quietly connects the city’s core, while above ground, an ever-evolving food scene of more than 11,000 restaurants reflects generations of migration, memory, and shared tables. The region stretches far beyond the city itself. To the east, Galveston Bay meets the Gulf, rich with artists, sailors, and, of course, quilters. With no hills to interrupt the view, the landscape opens into vast, unobstructed horizons. North toward Kingwood and south through Brazoria, the landscape shifts—from dense urban streets to tree-lined neighborhoods and open farmland. Each place adds its own rhythm and character, shaping a region that feels expansive yet deeply connected. Like a well-loved quilt, Greater Houston is made from many pieces: distinct in color and texture, rich with meaning, and stitched together by shared history and care. In this issue, we celebrate the makers who carry those stories forward—one block, one seam, one thoughtful stitch at a time. Writers: Rebecca Bratburd, Meg Cox, Frances O’Roark Dowell, Courtney Mabeus-Brown, Christopher Michel, Diane L. Murtha, Sharbreon Plummer, Carmen Schell, and Teresa Duryea Wong.
